The A&R Manager

Q - Is it necessary to go to university to be an A&R manager or what are the courses or the standard ones would you say?

A - No, I definitely don't think it's necessary to go to university to get into A&R. I feel like A&R is also a who-you-know job as well. I don't personally feel like because you've gone to university and you've studied this for three years, you're automatically entitled to get in a role. Because, you know, if you really listen to a lot of podcasts, or live interviews with a lot of A&R's in today's industry, no one really has the same journey

Q - What do you most like about your job?

A - I like seeing the end product if I'm being honest. I like to then be a part of that journey from the very start of a song to then it getting written firstly, getting recorded, getting mixed, getting mastered, then planning a video, getting locations ready, getting a video shot, getting it edited, you know, getting it finalised, getting it graded, submitted to distribution, coming up with a plan, marketing plan and how we're going to let the world hear it.

Q - Can you tell if someone's gonna be a star? And is there a specific checklist or a set criteria, or it's like a gut feeling?

A - I think you can see traits of someone who could be a superstar sometimes. I base a lot of it on an artist's drive as well, and their ambition. And sometimes it's not always about the talent - you know, that may sound a bit weird, like how can it not? - but there's a lot of artists in the industry who are not the most talented musically, but they have everything else going absolutely great for them.
